Become a Puppy Parent

Puppy Parents are a vital part of our team.   We need them to get our dogs to the point where they are expertly trained and socialized and ready to begin final intense training to serve the specific needs of their new owner.  When our pups are 10-12 weeks old, they are placed with their Puppy Parent for between 1-2.5 years (depending on the individual dog and what his/her final career will be) for socialization and basic obedience training.  A “typical” Puppy Parent loves animals and is willing to make a time and financial commitment that has a beautiful payoff - being an essential part of the process of training a dog to be not only a dog who loves to serve, but  who will be a loyal, ever-present and trusted companion.  When the dog is 2+ years old and ready to “move on”, he will graduate to our advanced training where he will receive his final specialized instruction and guidance.  Next, he is matched with his new owner and our trainers go through intensive education, training and testing to prepare him and his new owner for success.  Our puppy parents will be able to meet the pup’s new owner and present the dog to them at graduation.  Seeing the love and bond that forms with the recipient is heartwarming and wonderful and makes you know that you have truly made a difference in

Here are the responsibilities and duties of our Puppy Parents:

  • Socialize their pup by taking them out in public and getting them accustomed to all sorts of sights, sounds, smells, experiences and different kinds of people and animals.
  • Train their pup in basic obedience at home and with bi-weekly classes.
  • Provide the pup with toys, and food. (We provide the flea/tick and heartworm meds.)  Because Canine Guardians is a non-profit 501(c)(3) agency, these expenses will most likely be tax-deductible.  Check with your tax professional for guidelines.
  • Groom pup regularly - including teeth, ears and nails.
  • Report regularly to the agency on the pup’s social and obedience training progress using our progress reports.
  • When outside, keep the pup safely confined in a fenced yard (must be a physical one - not an invisible fence) or on a leash at all times.

If this sounds like something you would be interested in doing, please email us at info@canineguardians.org . Put Puppy Parent Application in the Subject. We will email you the form. Then, please fill it out and scan/email it back or mail it back.  You will be contacted within 36 hours for an interview and a home visit. There is also a Puppy Parent Agreement to sign.

MAKE A DONATION

  • Donate Now - Any amount will make a difference for our dogs and the recipients of these amazing dogs. Click on the PAW...

  • Matching Donations by your Employer - We are affiliated with Double The Donation and your company may very well be one of the MANY companies that matches employee donations which doubles your donation. Check if your company will match your donation. Did you know that more than 65% of Fortune 500 companies offer matching gift or volunteer grant programs, and countless smaller companies have followed suit. Sample Article: Employee Giving Programs 11 Some companies have gotten creative with their corporate giving, offering higher matches to organizations in a specific sector (educational, cultural, environmental, etc.) or even matching funds raised by employees in peer-to-peer campaigns. A few examples of these programs include: * Verizon provides $750 grants for 50 volunteer hours and matches up to $5,000 annually * IBM provides $1,000 grants to nonprofits where an employee has volunteered for 40 hours. They also match up to $5,000 annually for current employees or retirees. See link at top of this page.

  • Will it to Us - Name Canine Guardians as a benaficiary in your Will - Many people don’t know it, but you can donate to a charity or nonprofit organization by naming them as a beneficiary in your will. These bequests to charity are often called planned or legacy gifts. And they’re a meaningful, effective way to create a lasting legacy, both for yourself and for causes that are closest to your heart.
Many people choose to leave money to a charity in their will, but you can give any of your assets to a nonprofit. This includes:
  • Financial assets, like cash, stocks, and bonds
  • Real estate (you can even donate your house to charity!)
  • Personal property, like your vehicle, jewelry, or artwork
  • You can also name a charity as the beneficiary of a non-probate asset, like your life insurance policy, retirement account, or IRA.

  • FACEBOOK - Do a Birthday Fundraiser on FACEBOOK and raise money for Canine Guardians. It’s very easy to do. (We suggest asking for $400 for every 200 “friends” you have on FB). Generally, FB suggests this as your birthday approaches.

  • PAY PAL / EBAY -We are a PayPal Giving Fund and Ebay for Charities affiliate. You can make us Your Charity if you Buy or Sell on Ebay. Click Here for instructions.

  • Honor Someone - A lovely gesture is to make a donation IN MEMORY OF a loved one or service dog or your personal pet. If you would like to do that, we will send a beautiful card stating your gift that you can give the recipient and post a photo and brief description or testimony to your loved one (that you provide.) Email us with instructions.

  • IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER - Make an IRA Charitable Rollover to Canine Guardians
What is an IRA Charitable Rollover?
If you are age 70 ½ or older (effective this year 72 or older), you can make a gift from your IRA (traditional or Roth) to support Canine Guardians. This strategy works whether you itemize or not.
Please consult with your tax advisor for the benefits of making an IRA Charitable Rollover.

  • THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

About Dana the Reinder Dog book

One of our Service Dogs is now a famous Reindeer!!!!

Good Tidings’ Founder, Larry Harper, has released his fifth book, Dana the Reindeer Dog; a heartwarming holiday tale on how the North Pole’s resident Service Dog, Dana, saves Christmas!

In March of 2019, Larry was diagnosed with Dementia. Two years after his diagnosis, due to the incredible generosity of the GT Board, Mike Krukow, and Canine Guardians Assistance Dogs, Larry was gifted his wonderful service dog, Dana. Dana has paws-itively impacted Larry’s life in more ways than he could have ever imagined! The spirit of the holidays has always been at the forefront of our Mission, so it was a goal of Larry's to write a holiday themed story while teaching children the importance of service animals.

Click the link below to get your copy today. It's the perfect holiday gift for the little ones in your life! If you’d like to purchase a signed book, please contact bridgette@goodtidings.org.
